I've been going through the talks on Stanford's Entrepreneurship website. They host a series of talks by technology industry leaders. Lots of different topics. Usually followed by some great Q&A. In particular, I really enjoyed former HP CEO Carly Fiorina's talk: Leadership and Capability. Its a gem. Here are some of the notes I jotted down while listening.
- One must distinguish the truly important from the merely interesting
- A leader's job is to see possibilities and to help people seize possibilities
- Some early leader's in Carly's life recognized talent in her: "They saw potential in me and it made me see potential in myself."
- Everybody is afraid of something. Most people are afraid of something new. Thus you must give them some vision to strive towards
- No company can rely on its history.
- If values matter, then you need to coach, develop and measure based on those values.
There is also a really solid Q&A at the end. It starts out with a disgruntled former employee who uses the question time to attack the speaker. She handles the situation smoothly and firmly. A great example of handling conflict.
